Unexpected and diverse landscape with textures and colors you just won't believe.

In this below-sea-level basin, steady drought and record summer heat make Death Valley a land of extremes. Yet, each extreme has a striking contrast. Towering peaks are frosted with winter snow. Rare rainstorms bring vast fields of wildflowers. Lush oases harbor tiny fish and refuge for wildlife and humans. Despite its morbid name, a great diversity of life survives in Death Valley.

This diverse landscape must be seen to be believed . . . and photographed.

Zabriske Point at Dawn

We’ll capture sunsets and sunrises of these amazing landscapes. Some of the stunning areas we will visit are Zabriske Point, Dante's View, The Playa (valley floor), Badwater Basin, Mosiac Canyon, Mesquite Flats Sand Dunes and the Stove Pipe Wells and many more breathtaking views.

As usual, we are chasing the light. We will go to where the light looks best at any given time. I have a rough itinerary but will change it on the fly if it looks better somewhere else!

Bring your favorite camera gear, tripod, shutter release, filters and laptop with the latest version of Photoshop and Lightroom already installed and working.

All skill levels are encouraged to come and play in this atmosphere beyond words. After the workshop you will see why words can't explain this unusual and unique collection of  photographically rich landscape. Seriously!

Here are some of the things I hope to encourage your photographic growth in:

  • Image pre-visualization

  • Composition

  • Exposure

  • Depth of field

  • Lens selection

  • Image prep in Lightroom

  • Image enhancement in Photoshop

  • and so much more . . .

If you'd like to see what you too can create, visit my fine art web site at

This workshop is limited to 8 attendees so that I can run around and get with each of you to help and instruct as much as you desire. It is open to all levels of skill & desire so don’t be shy . . .

Abstract Art in Mosiac Canyon, Death Valley National Park, California

Abstract Art - Mosiac Canyon

Friday January 31st -
5p - We'll gather at our host hotel, The Amargosa Opera House. This place is haunted and is "old west colorful". Your room has a bed and a night stand. The rest of the furniture is painted on the wall! Yup! We'll have dinner and get acquainted and chat about what is in store for us. We can shoot some ghost images in the hallways. It's the perfect place for this. Hopefully we can get into the actual opera house. This is amazing. Sometimes we can . . . sometimes no. But I'll do my best to et us in!

Saturday February 1st -
4:30a - Yep, that early! We'll meet in the lobby for a trip to Zabriske Point and the for an amazing sunrise. We'll shoot for the morning then return to the hotel for late breakfast/lunch.

No need to call the hotel as I'll have a room reserved for you. You will pay for your room once you check in.

In the Field -
Camera, tripod, filters, lenses, release cord and whatever other gear makes you happy. Sunscreen, sunglasses, bug spray and a hat are advised. Having layers of clothing is great as you can take off and put them back on as the temperature changes. Having rain gear available is not a bad idea either. And rain gear for your equipment, too! More detailed info about gear after you register.

In the Classroom -

This is a hands-on opportunity so bring your computer!

I have discovered that offering critique sessions during a Road Trip greatly increases your growth. Being able to shoot, critique, adjust and understand during a workshop is a very efficient and rewarding way to learn.

I'll share with you how I edit and prepare my images in Lightroom and Photoshop. I also use the NIK Software suite. Have these all loaded and running on your computer before the class, please!

Your Investment -
For your investment you will have the opportunity to photograph some of the most incredible landscapes in the national park system. There are a lot of eclectic items to photograph in the park.
